Halloween Day #2

The Halloween fun continues. Yesterday night was our ward Halloween party. We dressed up Grant as a cute little clown again and he loved playing all of the fun games. He played the fishing pond, the bean bag toss, the pumpkin toss and pin the smile on the jack o lantern. His favorite though was playing in a big blow up pool of balloons. Even more than the games, Grant loved the prizes of candy he won after playing the games and even more so he loved the cupcake walk and the yummy prize cupcake.

Bluegrass

Saturday our family attended the afternoon portion of the Tucson Bluegrass Festival. We went last year and have attended one other festival in Benson several months ago. They are actually quite enjoyable. Bluegrass is a nice, easy type of music to listen to and the people at the festivals are always extremely nice. It is usually a retired crowd who attends so us and our two little kids draws some attention. We were told many times on Saturday how cute our family was and how well behaved little Grant is. All I know is that I was exhausted by the end of the show from trying to keep Grant entertained and from the 4 trips to the potty. We had a good time though. Chad actually headed out to the festival (which was at Desert diamond Casino) before me and the boys. The boys and I went to a lunch at a friend's house first. My friend Sharla put on a Fall Lunch for some friends. We had this really delicious pumpkin curry soup in bread bowls and some other fall dishes. It was a fun little get together. Sorry there are no pictures to post but there's not much to take a picture of at the festivals that would let you know we are even at a festival.

Halloween Day #1

Friday began our week long celebration of Halloween. Grant is very excited about this holiday this year. He has become the Great Pumpkin Spotter. He finds and points out every pumpkin of every size within a 100 yard view. It's really quite amazing. There are some pumpkins I truly cannot believe he sees they are so far away and so small. Also, his new favorite toy is that $.59 mini pumpkin I bought him earlier this week at the grocery store. He brings it everywhere with him.

Friday we went to a toddler Halloween party at our friend Sandra's house. Her little boy Jack is Grant's age. It was a dress up party and we did indoor trick or treating. Grant had a fun time playing on the swing set and getting candy. I finally finished Grant's clown costume about one hour before we had to leave for the party (I accomplished #96 on my list too). He sure is a cute clown though and loves the costume.

Friday night we headed to the zoo for their annual Howloween celebration. Basically, we walk in a long over crowded line of people and strollers and trick or treat in front of the various animal displays. We went last year and had a good time but not so this year. It was extremely crowded and slow moving. I can't even say how many times I was flat tired by a stroller, including our own. Grant wasn't even into it that much. He just rode in the stroller and kept asking to see the animals. Thankfully the elephants were out so there was one animal spotting. Grant had more fun at In-N-Out Burger afterwards than he did at the zoo I think.

Friday afternoon we tried to get our house somewhat decorated for Halloween but we got as far as getting the decorations out because little Cole was not being cooperative. Hopefully, before the end of the weekend we will get some decorations up.

Our Halloween celebration will continue this week with the ward Halloween party on Wednesday and of course real Halloween trick or treating on Friday night. Stay tuned.

Lessons learned in motherhood...

BRIBERY!!!! It works beautifully with 2-1/2 year olds who don't usually want to cooperate. Yesterday, I ventured to the grocery store and Target with both children. Grant is a generally well behaved child by nature but has been acting up more since Cole was born. Therefore, I have reverted to bribery. At the grocery store, if he is good while we shop he gets a cheese stick (it's better than candy). Yesterday, I also purchased him a $.59 mini-pumpkin and promised a ride on the train outside the grocery store if he was good. The bribes worked beautifully. Grant is completely enthralled with pumpkins right now and is learning about Halloween so the pumpkin kept him entertained while shopping. He also sort of loved the train. He was a bit uncertain about the whole thing while riding but when it was done, he wanted to ride again. Too bad mom was out of quarters right? Here is Grant on his train ride. This by the way is a train he's been asking to ride for about the last three weeks but I never have quarters (for real). Bribery, I highly recommend it.

On Monday afternoon, Grant and I had nothing going on so I took the boys to the mall to play and of course scan the sales racks at Old Navy. Grant has a great time playing at the play area there. However, when we got there all he kept saying to me was, "I want to eat. I want Donald's." So, being the over indulgent mother that I am sometimes we bought McDonald's, took a potty break then headed back to the play area. Grant loves his chicken nuggets and chocolate milk and mommy loves her snack wraps, apple pies and Dr. Pepper (I missed it when I was pregnant). While Grant was running around burning off energy and chicken nuggets Cole had a good little nap in the stroller.

Below is a picture of Cole taking a nap on Chad. Chad is not actually sleeping, he just absolutely cannot keep his eyes open for a picture. It drives me insane.

Adventures of a 2-1/2 Year Old

I have to document these events so I won't forget them. It goes to show how crazy life gets with a 2 year old.

Earlier this week, I was downstairs doing dishes and Grant said he wanted to go upstairs and lay on his bed so I told him to go ahead. Several minutes later, over the sound of running water, I think I hear a fain, "I need to go potty." Those words, or even the thought of those words, send me into hyperspeed, so I rushed upstairs to see if my ears had heard correctly. When I got upstairs, Grant's door was shut so I turned the knob to open it. However, I quickly discovered that the door was locked. Grant had figured out how to lock the door but not unlock the door. I hate our door knobs because they have those weird little holes you have to fit a pointy key into and try to find the right trigger spot. Well, this process took me about 10 minutes. During that 10 minutes I could hear Grant grunting and pushing as he went #2 and then I hear, "Uh oh." I ask him what was wrong and he said he went pee-pee. What a mess I had when I finally got that darn door open.

A couple of days later, at about 2:30 in the morning, I again hear a faint, "I need to go pee pee." I jump out of bed and run to Grant's room. I discover the door shut with the light on and the door locked again. Again, during the 10 minutes it took me to open the door, I hear "Uh oh" as he goes potty behind the door. I had just gotten back to bed 1 hour earlier after feeding Cole and Cole woke up again at 4:30. That was a rough night.

Sometimes, I really question my decision to potty train Grant before Cole was born. It's definitely a mixed blessing.

Grant has also become quite the stubborn little boy since Cole came into the family. If I had a dollar for every "No!" I hear each day, I'd be rich and Chad could quit working. He dumped his huge box of blocks out onto the floor the other day. When Chad and I asked him to pick them up in preparation for bed, the answer was a continuous no. Chad and I took away his binkie and said no movies the next day but to no avail. Of course, this was during an approximate 1 hour tantrum of crying and screaming by Grant. He finally went to bed, never having picked up the blocks. Chad just through a blanket over the blocks (to keep the dogs from chewing them in the night) and left them on the floor. All through the next day, Grant repeatedly asked for a movie and every time I had to say not until the blocks were picked up. I also asked him repeatedly if he wanted to pick up the blocks and the answer was always no. Those blocks sat on the floor all day long. Do you want to know what finally got him to pick them up? Chad pulled out the back of tortilla chips to have my delicious mango salsa. Grant wanted chips and Chad said he had to put a block away to have a chip. Surprisingly, he ran right over and put a block in the box. With each chip, he had to put away more and more blocks. Eventually, after a couple of hours he put away the entire pile of blocks. Why tortilla chips and not a binkie or Cars created the motivation I'll never understand but after 24 hours they were finally put away?

As Grant's t-shirt says, "I'm 2 and there's nothing you can do about it." Sad but true.

The Park

Yesterday, Grant and I went with a few other friends to a nearby park to slide and swing. Grant loves to swing and attempts the slides a few times. The following is a cute picture of Grant and his friend Nicholas taking a strawberry snack break. I am trying to get Grant out of the house most mornings for some type of activity so that he does not get bored and I don't go crazy. It takes a whole lot of extra effort and work to get it done but I think it's worth it.

Life as a mother of two

It has begun. I have not had help all week and I am officially on my own as a mother of two. Wow, is it pure chaos!!! I'm hanging in there but there is little time for much besides feeding Cole and getting Grant out and about for an activity. It takes me about 2 hours to get everyone ready and out the door for an outing. I know it gets better but it sure is exhausting now.

Last weekend we had a good family time. Chad, his mom and Grant headed up to Mt. Lemmon to attend Oktoberfest. However, when they got up there the weather as so bad it had been cancelled. They got lunch instead and headed back down the mountain. Poor little Grant go so carsick on that windey road that he puked up his lunch and his treats. He came home so tired and sluggish. When Chad and Grant got home we headed out to the stake BBQ they hold every year. There were two jumping castles and an obstacle course. Grant loved the obstacle course. He and Chad also through the frisbee and a football and had a little wrestling match on the grass. i think Grant had a great time with his daddy all day Saturday.

Monday was a holiday so Chad had the day off. Grant had his Little Critters zoo class too. Grant, Cole and I headed to the class and Chad met us afterwards. Bad choice for Chad though. The theme of the class was "Hooray for Bears." Grant made a cute little polar bear mask and paws and then we got to go behind the scenes and see the polar bears up close, meaning about 1 foot away with only a chain link fence between us. It was so unbelievable. I say bad choice for Chad because his all time favorite animal is the polar bear. He was very bummed he missed the experience.

Cole is growing and gaining weight slowly but surely. He is a big sleeper and it makes me a little nervous. He only wakes up about one time each night and I have to wake him up every few hours to feed him during the day. I'm not sure what to do with so much sleeping.

The Mellen Boys

Because of the constant business of caring for two little boys, even with the unending help of a mtoher and mother-in-law, I haven't taken pictures of the boys in about a week but here is little Cole from a week ago. Grant is in love with his little brother. He loves to give Cole kisses and lay on the couch next to him. Grant does not like it when I have to feed Cole because it means he can't play with him. I frequently hear, "No feed him." Other than little sleep and the pains of breastfeeding, things are going well. Cole is a sweet boy, who only crie when something is genuinely wrong. It's such a nice treat to have a calm, content baby. We never knew it could be like this.

(Grant and Cole laying on the couch together)

(Cole napping on mommy's belly -- something seems so familiar)

Grant has been ultra spoiled with one grandma after another here for about 10 days. He is getting things and getting away with things he normally wouldn't if it were just mom. As you can see below, he had a great time with an ice cream from Oma.

Announcing the arrival of Cole Aaron Mellen

Cole was born on September 17, 2008 at 9:26 PM. He was 8 lbs 13 oz and 20 inches long. After a doctor's appointment that morning and a two hour trip to our zoo, contractions finally started in the early afternoon. We started getting ourselves organized and preparing to go to the hospital. We dropped off Grant at Amy's house around 4:30 and got to the hospital between 5 and 5:30. I was nervous that we were going too early because the contractions weren't that consistent or that hard but we went anyway. It turned out to be a good thing. I was dilated to between 7 and 8 cm and although I could only feel contractions about every 6-8 minutes they were actually coming every 3-4 minutes. No one could believe I was not in pain and perfectly relaxed so far along into my labor. My labor progressed at a nice, casual pace with no complications or concerns and about 5 to 5-1/2 hours later Cole arrived. We are very blessed to have this new little guy in our family and blessed to have had such an uneventful birth, particulary after Grant's lightning speed birth with complications. Cole and I will be in the hospital until tonight. My mom arrives tomorrow for about 10 days then Chad's mom comes for another 10 days. Cole is turning out to be a good sleeper and a good eater. Grant and Chad spent the better part of yesterday with us at the hospital. Grant was more interested in being close to mommy than baby Cole, which was expected. His interest increased throughout the day though and he is quite sweet with him. They will be a good pair and probably cause all sorts of trouble together when they are older. Chad and I can't wait. Enjoy the pictures below.

Addendum to our Crazy Weekend

I forgot to mention in my post about our weekend that on Saturday Grant went to his first birthday party. His friend Shayna turned 3 so she had a birthday party at her house with some of her friends. Shayna's mom, Regina, is the person who watched Grant during the two years that I worked after he was born. Shayna and her older sister, Oraclle are like sisters to Grant. Grant seemed to have a good time, although it was later in the morning so he was kind of ready for his nap. They had a swimming pool set up in the backyard and pizza and snacks to eat. There was also a pinata. Grant wouldn't hit it though. He kept asking for a turn but then when he got the stick in his hand he would start crying and saying no. Grant enjoyed watching Shayna open her presents and just had fun with the kids. Of course, he loved the cake and candy he won from the pinata.

Our crazy weekend

This weekend Shelli came into town overnight. In true Mellen tradition, we had to take her on a weird Tucson excursion so we took her to this event called Glow at the Triangle L Ranch in Oracle, about 1 hour away from Tucson. Here is a link about the event. http://www.trianglelranch.com/glow.htm

It was funny. Quite the sub-culture we encountered. I am not even sure how to describe what we saw. They had a Scuplture Path that had these weird art things set up. They had a stage with various bands playing, which was fun. It was just a strange, once in a life time experience. The only thing that made it uncomfortable was that I was having contractions and my back hurt. I mentioned to Shelli that whenever we attend these weird events around town, we never seem to run into anyone we know. Shelli said that means we are associating with the right people.

On Sunday, we went to the first fall Music Under the Starts Tucson Pops concert. Several times each year the pops orchestra gives free concerts at Reid Park at the bandshell. We bring cheese and crackers and other snacks and go sit on the grass and listen to the concert. It is about 2 hours. Grant had a great time, playing on the grass, attacking daddy, eating yummy snacks and dancing to the music. We love going to these events. It helps us remember our Chicago days.

Grant the artist

I decided it was time to start providing a creative outlet for Grant, in honor of the artsy Mellen side of his family. Last week I bought him a $.92 watercolor set, which he absolutely loves. You can see how much he loved painting. He just found it more fun to paint himself than the paper.

Because Grant loved painting himself so much Chad suggested that I get him fingerpaints so I did just that yesterday. He loved it and of course loved painting himself as much as the paper. Barry also ended up being slightly fingerpainted but thankfully I caught that before it went too far. I love Crayola washable products. They are a mother's best friend in my opinion.

Jelly update

Well, things didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped. The jelly is not setting. I have to unseal the jars and add more pectin then reseal the jars. Thank goodness the pectin recipe insert comes with a section about what to do if the jelly doesn't set. I'm bummed though. I followed the instructions just right. I don't know what happened. Does anyone know what you do wrong when jelly doesn't set?

#71: Learn to make jam

Alright folks I did it. I learned to make jam and accomplished one item on my list. After 3 years of living in this house, I finally went out and picked ripe prickly pear from the cacti in our neighborhood, reduced it to juice and then made jelly. Chad and I have talked about me doing that since we moved into our house. Every year, we see the beautiful fruit grow, ripen and fall off without ever being used. Well, not this year. I picked the fruit and made juice on Saturday and then today made the jelly. The worst part was burning the spines off of each piece of fruit. It took me about an hour to clean a half grocery sack full. I had to take each piece of fruit one by one and burn them off using my gas stove burner. It was hot, particularly given I'm so pregnant. I took a couple of breaks but got it done. From there it didn't take took much time. You put the fruit in a big pot, add 1-2 cups of water and boil the fruit for about 20-30 minutes. Once softened, you take a potato masher to the fruit and squeeze out as much juice as you can, then pour it into a bowl through a colander lined with cheese cloth. You leave the colander over the pot to let it drain and let the fruit cool. When it's cool enough to touch, you put on latex gloves and start squeezing the heck out of the fruit mash to get every last drop of juice you possibly can out of the mash. From there, you can drink it or make jelly or whatever else you want. I chose to make jelly. We shall know in a day or two if the jelly turned out. I hope the jars sealed and the jelly set. I'll let you know.

Potty training update

Grant is doing fantastic going pee pee on the potty. He has even gone at the zoo, the baseball game and church without problem. I bring his potty insert with us and he is comfortable going anywhere. He tells me when he needs to go and hasn't had an accident in days. #2 is still another story though. He just won't do it. We have made progress though, in that he no longer freaks out and starts throwing a tantrum when I take him the bathroom to clean him up. Maybe he'll actually go on the potty before he turns 3. Wouldn't that be nice? I'm not complaining though. #2 happens only once or twice a day and sometimes every other day so it's not a huge deal. Going pee pee is a huge accomplishment and I'll take it.

Our Labor Day Weekend

Chad had his first staffing weekend this past weekend and had to work Labor Day for his holiday over the next year so we couldn't go on any fun road trips or anything (although I've now heard from two separate people who went camping and got rained out so I think I'm glad we didn't try it). We managed to have some fun though.

On Saturday, we went to the Desert Museum for one of their Summer Saturday night events. During the summer, the museum stays open late on Saturday nights so you can wander around after dark when it's cooler. We had a good time. Our neighborhood is located in this weird, dry vortex, which means that while it may be raining around the rest of Tucson, it is not raining at our house. Because of this vortex we headed out to the museum, not knowing that it was downpouring at the museum. We had to make a dinner pit stop at McDonald's to wait out some of the rain. Thankfully, it did die down (another blessing of Arizona, rain comes but doesn't stay long) and as we drove closer to the museum it was down to a mere drizzle. The drizzle actually helped keep the night cool, although we did get quite damp by the end. The museum is a fun place, although not my favorite. They have a reptile house, mountain lions, wolves, big horn sheep, beavers etc. Grant kept asking to see more animals and when we told him we had seen them all, he did not accept that answer with much happiness. I have never known a little boy to love looking at animals as much as he does. You can see from the pictures of Grant below, just how wet we got though.

(Grant relaxing in his stroller.)

(Grant petting the baby pigs)

On Labor Day, we went to the very last Tucson Sidewinders game ever. The Sidewinders are the D-backs AAA team and they are moving to Reno. They had their final game last night so we went to enjoy the festivities. We try to go to a few games each season since living here, although I have to say that since having Grant I'm pretty sure I haven't actually seen one of the games. They have all sorts of activities for kids going on during the games. They have a bunch of giant inflatable toys, i.e. a slide and an obstacle course. Grant wanted to try out the obstacle course so I let him. Surprisingly, he did not freak out when he went in it, even though there were lots of bigger kids plowing through it. He went through the obstacle course countless times and some of the kids were so nice to him, helping him out and watching out for him. The pictures below are him in the obstacle course. He had a great time and was upset when they closed it down and he couldn't go through anymore.

Our favorite part of baseball games is the food of course. Chad has his superdog and soda and I enjoy my brat with sauerkraut and fresh squeezed lemonade. Grant loves the peanuts. About three separate times Grant pointed at the cotton candy and asked, "What's that?" Chad, also a sucker for cotton candy, bought some for the two of them to share. Grant, of course, had to hold the bag and graciously shared with his dad. He even told me later that he shared the cotton candy with daddy. (We are forever learning and practicing the concept of sharing so Grant likes to let me know when he does share.) Both father and son had blue fingers, lips and tongues at the end of the bag but loved every minute of it.

(Grant and Chad enjoying cotton candy.)

After the game ended, they had a fantastic fireworks display and the let everyone who wanted go down on the field and run the bases. We, of course, couldn't pass up that opportunity so we headed down with everyone else. I headed to homeplate to capture the Kodak moment and Chad chased Grant around the bases (I'm also way to pregnant to do the chasing). Grant loved it and was running crazy. Chad had to keep grabbing him to put him back on track. Grant thought it was the greatest thing ever and wanted to do it again when he was done.

(Chad and Grant running into home.)

After base running, we had to stop and see Sally Sidewinder. Every time Grant sees one of these mascots he bursts into tears and is really scared. However, last night was a breakthrough. He did not cry, only a little uncertain. Our little boy is growing up. We are sad the Sidewinders are leaving and are going to miss them. It was relatively cheap entertainment.

(Chad and Grant with Sally Sidewinder. Although he looks somewhat terrified, he is not crying.)

A conversation every mom hopes to have with her two year old...

Two year old says, "I need a gun. I need a gun, mom."
Mom responds, "Your gun is under the TV."
Then a few minutes later, with a gun pointed at mom's back, two year old says, "Stop cooking dinner. Stop cooking dinner, mom."
A few minutes after that, mom gets hit a few times in the back with the gun so mom says, "No, no. Stop hitting mommy or I'll take your gun away."

(Is this what my life has become?)

Lindsay quite pregnant

The following pictures are me at about 3-1/2 - 4 weeks until my due date. I can't wait to have this baby.

Smart Little Grant

Grant has been very into Curious George since last week. It's all he wants to watch. I guess I should be grateful because I have watched Peter Pan about 50 million times already and am really tired of it. This morning he was watching Curious George and George got a piggy bank from the Man with the Yellow Hat to keep his money in. A couple of minutes later Grant looked at me and told me he wanted a money pig. Yes...at 2 years old the boy knows what money is (mostly because when he finds it I have to take it away so he won't put it in his mouth and swallow it). Thankfully, I had an empty Play-Doh container because the pink Play-Doh mysteriously disappeared last week (Barry (our white lab), do you know anything about that?). I cut a hole in the top of the lid and then we had to go around the house finding whatever change we could so that he could put it in his jar. How do they figure these things out?

Update on Potty Training

Grant has the #1 part about down. He still has an accident here and there but he's now telling me he has to go and actually going. He has stayed dry during naps and nighttime now. He did it in just over 3 days. #2 is another issue though. We are still struggling with that. He has a container of Play-Doh sitting on the bookcase that he really wants but can't have until he goes in the potty and not his underwear. So far, nothing but we'll see how it goes today. The 3 day method really did work amazingly well for #1 at least. For other kids, it may work for both. I totally recommend it.

Adventures in Potty Training

I began the mission of potty training this past Wednesday after my doctor's appointment. It has been long and exhausting but not quite as bad as I expected it to be. I am following the 3 day potty training method found at 3daypottytraining.com. He has come far in just over 48 hours. Wednesday was all about accident after accident. I bought about 25 pair of underwear and he went through just about everyone on Wednesday alone. The reward though was that Wednesday night he did not pee his bed all night. He woke up completely dry on Thursday morning. By Thursday late morning, he had finally peed in the toilet, after starting in his underwear of course. This continued for all of Thursday. One time he did actually tell me before he had to go. His mother was so proud. Today we have been focusing on telling me before he starts to go. This morning was rough and we had some regression. He fought me a couple times on sitting on the potty but since his nap he's been on track and has peed and stayed dry. He has non-verbal signals that I have figured out and that counts as telling mommy. Naps are the big problem. He doesn't hold it during naps at all, nor does he wake up. He gets up from his nap completely soaked. I don't know what to do about this so if there are any suggestions (other than putting on a diaper) I'd love to hear them. I'll keep you all posted on the potty training endeavors of the Mellen family. I know you're all deeply interested.

Monsoons: A blessing or a curse?

Every year we here in Arizona look forward with anticipation to monsoon season because it provides significant relief to the oppressive heat we have each summer. The monsoons are great because it makes everything cooler and greener and more beautiful. However, it also makes the weeds grow. Our backyard is presently filled with budding, blooming and thriving tumbleweed and sticker plants. The picture below is a pile of weeds Chad picked last night. This pile represents maybe, generously speaking, a third of the weeds in our backyard. You can see the size of some of the weeds in the picture with Chad two below. It's absolutely ridiculous. A friend of ours commented ealier this week that if let it grow out a little more, it would look like we did it intentionally rather than just out of serious backyard neglect.

Grant had a great time outside last night while Chad was weeding and I was sitting in a patio chair watching. He begged for about 20 minutes to have the sprinkler turned on but had to wait until Chad fertilized the grass. Once it was on, we could not keep him out of it. He plowed right into the sprinkler and threw a huge fit when we said it was time to go in. He loved drinking the water and stopping the spirnkler from turning. This morning when we were feeding the dogs he asked if he could go in the sprinkler. This may become a regular occurrence.

This is video of Grant in the sprinkler.
